Remote Education Curriculum 2020/21

Our ambitious remote education curriculum mirrors the quality and content of our in school curriculum content and objectives and will continue to meet the needs of all children, leading to sustained improvements in outcomes. Each day follows the daily timetable, providing objectives, tasks and links and contact with a teacher to ensure that whilst at home, all children can continue to learn with the same progression and quality. Our expectation is that each child at home follows the daily plans laid out, using the links and completing the work set. They can then send any work and communication to their class teachers using Purple Mash. Feedback will be given by the class teacher using Purple Mash.

Our expectation is that all children at home will connect and engage with remote learning in all subjects.

Keeping your child safe online

Whilst there are huge benefits to being online in order to stay connected to family and friends during this period, the government recognises many parents may feel concerned about the activities and content their children are accessing. This guidance outlines resources to help keep children safe from different risks online and where to go to receive support and advice.

It is important to have regular conversations about staying safe online and to encourage children to speak to you if they come across something worrying online.

These resources provide guidance for parents and carers to keep children safe online. They will, amongst other things, support you to talk to your child about a range of online safety issues, set up home filtering in a child-friendly way and set up age-appropriate parental controls on digital devices:

Apps to help children stay safe online

The BBC have a website and app called Own It. The website has a lot of content for children to help them navigate their online lives, and the free smartphone app comes with a special keyboard which can intervene with help and support in the moments that children need it the most. It can be downloaded for free in the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

SafeToNet is an app for parents to help them safeguard their children from online risks like cyberbullying and sexting, whilst always respecting their child’s rights to privacy. The SafeToNet Foundation is providing UK families with free-for-life access to the SafeToNet safeguarding solution during coronavirus.

Remote Education Curriculum

So that pupils and their parents know what to expect from their school if they need to self-isolate or local restrictions require them to remain at home, schools have been asked to publish information about their remote education provision on their websites by 25 January 2021. Our information is published below and takes into account the most up to date guidance published by the DfE, EEF and Ofsted. We hope that this gives you the detailed information you require, however, should you wish to find out more, please contact ; headteacher@sandal.wakefield.sch.uk

British Science Week - WC 8th March

This week is British Science Week, which means children all over the country are taking part in science activities to celebrate! The theme this year is ‘Innovating for the Future’ and in school we are completing an investigation into how to filter water to make it clean. We will be designing and making our own water filters and testing them to see how effective they are.

Whilst you are at home, you might want to create your own water filter using items from your home and garden.

There is more information on how to do this on this website: https://www.instructables.com/Simple-Water-Filter-... and by watching this video from Yorkshire Water:

You will need to use your scientific skills to observe the change in the water after it has passed through your filter - you could record your results through photos/videos, written notes, an article for the school newspaper explaining your findings - whatever way works for you!

If you would like to find out more information about how water is made safe to drink and about different organisations which are working to provide clean water to the world, these links might be useful: https://www.wateraid.org/uk/the-crisis/water

We look forward to seeing how you get on !

World Book Week 1st - 5th March 2021

Children's Mental Health Week 2021

Next week is Children’s Mental Health Week 2021. The theme this year is: Express Yourself. We would love for our children and families to enjoy a day off timetable on Wednesday (Wellbeing Wednesday) to creatively express themselves in any way they wish. This could be done through art, music, dancing, writing, drama, cookery, yoga, meditation, dressing up, singing…whatever you enjoy and what makes you feel good!

There is a live assembly on Monday at 9am, to kick-start your week and explain what it’s all about, with Blue Peter’s Lindsey Russell and CBBC presenter Rhys Stephenson, alongside some other special, well-known faces. Click here to access: https://classroom.thenational.academy/assemblies/c... During the assembly, BAFTA Kids will also be launching their Young Presenter Competition – keep your eyes peeled!

There are also children’s workshops running every morning next week from The Courtyard Trust. The sessions are 45minutes long and include: drama, singing, yoga, poetry and dance. This will be on their Facebook page, so you children need an adult’s permission. Please also see flyer for more info.

The following organisations offer information and support on mental health and wellbeing:

RSPB Big Schools Birdwatch

This month in school we would have been participating in the RSPB’s big schools birdwatch to see how many different birds we could spot in our school grounds. As we can’t do this in school currently, I am letting you know about how you could still get involved in this at home if you would like to.

This weekend (29th January - 31st January) is the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch. This is where people from all over the country spend 1 hour in their garden (or on a walk in their local area) and see how many different varieties of birds they can spot. This helps the RSPB to identify which birds can be found in different areas of the country.

If you would like to take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch, I have attached a poster to help you identify some common birds which you might see and you can use this to keep a tally of any bird you see whilst you are doing the birdwatch. All you need to do is choose 1 hour at some point during the weekend (whenever is convenient for you) and sit in your garden or go for a walk near where you live (with a grown up!) and count the different varieties of birds you see. Once you have done this, you could email a photo of your finished tally to me so we can see which birds are common in our local area.
