Together we Learn. Together we Live.

Together we Grow. Together we Give.

Maths at Sandal Castle Primary School is taught through a variety of different strands for which you will find information and evidence using the various tabs:

  • Non-negotiables- daily teaching of the underpinning maths concepts required within the curriculum for each year group.Children practise a range of skills such as counting, times tables, doubling and halving and mental arithmetic.

  • Maths Lessons- daily teaching of the maths content prescribed within the national curriculum.Children are taught to use a range of practical resources to support their learning and bring maths to life in the classroom.Within maths lessons children engage in a wide range of activities to secure and deepen their fluency, knowledge of mental and written methods of calculation, ability to use and apply their learning in a range of concepts, reason logically and solve increasingly complex problems.

  • Teaching Resources– As part of our commitment to providing the very best maths education experience for all children, we are working with the Yorkshire Maths Hub and currently use White Rose Maths planning materials which use mastery teaching techniques to allow children to secure understanding and progress logically through the curriculum
  • Maths Learning is encountered and applied across all areas of the school day.Children engage in a range of maths activities on a daily basis which are embedded in practical, real-world contexts e.g. telling the time, using a thermometer to read the temperature, measuring angles.

  • TT Rockstars – Children have access to TT Rockstars online to allow them to independently practise their times tables both in and out of school. The charts are read out in assembly with children receiving recognition for their achievements. The Year 6 children have the opportunity to enter the TT Rockstars Rock Wrangle, which sees schools from across the region (primary and secondary) compete to win a prestigious

Year 6

After learning all about Census Day 2021, we decided to collect our own data about how we travel to school. Like the Government, we also decided to collate, represent and then evaluate and analyse our data. To do this, we created tally charts, line graphs, pie charts and then answered questions, linking back to initial predictions, which allowed us to interpret the data we had collected. Based on a proven concrete-pictorial-abstract approach, Numicon encourages children to explore maths using structured imagery and apparatus in order to understand and explain mathematical concepts:

  • Gives children confidence through demonstrating how and why they arrived at their answer
  • Easily assess understanding by watching and listening to what children do and say
  • Flexibility to use alongside existing resources, or as a complete maths programme
